The O'Jays | Back Stabbers

Album Review: O’Jays | Back Stabbers
By Jerry "The Mouse" Clark
The year 1972 is what I call my year of awareness. I had been on my own for a full year, thinking that I had the solution to the problems of the world from the books read, the brief time away from home and the music that inspired me. That was the year of the O’Jays “Back Stabbers “lp, addressing love, peace and togetherness to many lives of young brothers and sisters in that troubling era.
The first track “When the World’s At Peace” hits you with the funk of James Brown and Sly Stone. The message is get it together planet for the survival of us all. Traveling to the next track is the signature “Back Stabbers”. This track expressed it wasn’t brotherly to take what is not yours and to a degree it ostracized those who did.
It would not be an O’Jays LP without a pleading Eddie Levert . The blue lights were tuned on at the house parties on “Who Am I” , ”Listen To The Clock On The Wall” and “Sunshine” - some of the sweetest slow tunes of all-time. It wasn’t just slow tunes but the dance tracks “Time to Get Down” , “Love Train” and “992 Arguments“ that you waited all week to see the fellows perform Saturday mornings on Soul Train.
The seal on this amazing LP is the internationally famous “Love Train” that defines it all. This cd is one of many that inspired this man to go out in the world to make it a better place. Find a place in your music collection for “Back Stabbers”.
