DeBarge | Rhythm Of The Night

DeBarge | Rhythm Of The Night
Gordy - MCA Records. 1983

Look at El DeBarge Now in 2010...Look at the Brotha.

He has staged a comeback only players in R&B can appreciate. Only us who can remember when he belted out that crazy, sick falsetto to "All This Love" back in '79. Then years later, to 2010, and we got our bread and butter back up on stage still high pitchin' those ballads. I CAN'T wait for the new album. Which is why I pulled out another record in reflection of people I dig for R&B music. I pulled out his entire family for this one. I pulled out DeBarge.

I pulled out 5 members of a group that matched R&B fluidly with Pop music back in 1983. But we didn't pay enough attention then. In album, "Rhythm Of The Night" the majority of spoon fed softies by means of simple songs sparkled big and it was hot! When it was cool to wear parachute pants & sport flourescent green shirts and pants. Baggies (pants) with the long zipper on the side as to when you zipped it down, you were sportin' different colors. Remember those?

A time when just about any and every 12" single rocked radio stations silly. And the title song "Rhythm Of The Night" was one of them. Boy this record was strong. It sounded refreshing and it felt good. It was easy to groove to. The family DeBarge was peaking I said. It felt good to hang out after 10pm in Southern Cal near Venice Beach on this one. And if you didn't own a Impala drop top convertible and there was no more space (everybody packed in), then you were left right at the Slauson swap meet, near the bus stop. Next to the fire hydrant. While they cruised to the beach or Crenshaw Blvd.

So cool was the purity of this record, "The Heart Is Not So Smart", "Who's Holding Donna Now", "Single Heart". Ooohh, so pure and so simple. So light as air - the same way El caressed those tracks. It was shining through "Who's Holding Donna Now"; I see why the ladies adored him them, and will adore him again after the new release next month.

"You Wear It Well" was an easy fashion show theme track. All of those hot garment making companies should have made sure to tell the music production crew at every fashion catwalk to 'please use DeBarge's You Wear It Well when ever you can - preferably 1st when the model strolls thru, would ya'?

You know what is interesting: How come "The Walls (Came Tumbling Down)" almost matches up to classic Michael Jackson's footstomper "Wanna Be Startin' Something"? It still grooved no matter what.

"Share My World" had to be a look back to their already admired set of slow jams from over the years.

Yes - DeBarge (Bunny, Eldra, James, Mark & Randy) lives on. May I add this thought too?

To Mr. El DeBarge. Congrats on a big comeback and a strong showing no matter where you perform Brother. I am proud to see you take a firm stand as an artist to not ever give up on your talent, nor your passion. I know I speak well for T.U.M.S., so May God Bless you and your entire Family - THANK YOU for the memories and more you are now creating...

Peace,
Charles F. Sherard
