Starship Orchestra | Celestial Sky (2nd Review)

Starship Orchestra
Celestial Sky
Produced by NormanConnors
1980 was fun the Age of Disco was peeking and a new moment era of the combination of Soul, Funk Jazz and Dance hit the scene. I remember those days well! That’s when the Friday Happy Hour (the 2 for1 drinks, dinner buffet and networking) hit the scene. To make a long story short, the Dee Jays would always start happy hour with jazzy mix. During happy hour is where I discovered the Starship Orchestra. The song playing in the club that evening was “All Those Things”. The next morning I purchased the Celestial Sky lp and the love affair started.
The first selection “You’re A Star” has an 80’s east coast Disco groove. It’s a definite warm up song for a night on the town. The following selection New York, New York reminds so much of Greenwich Village. This track is jazzy with a hint of Reggae. Just listening makes me want a New York slice (pizza). My favorite is “The Waiting Game” performed by Jean Carn (not in the credits but it’s her voice). This song always gives me goose bumps because the delivery.Next the fellows take you to Brazil with a smooth samba “All Those Things”. It’s is very acoustic and romantic.
The Starship Orchestra covers a Bobby Lyle composition “The Genie”. I have to admit that I like this version compared to the original. Not taking anything away from Bobby, because he is the person playing keys. I look for a road trip song on every cd and the title cut “Celestial Sky” makes the grade for this project. Marcie Allen the lead vocalist on “Yesterday” is just one of many singers Norman Connors have in his bag of tricks. Marcie’s voice (sultry and confident) just stands out with help from background singers Maxie Anderson and Josie James.
This cd has been reissued on Expansion Records and I highly recommend that you purchase a copy.
