Pieces Of A Dream
Pieces Of A Dream
In 1981, Pieces Of A Dream broke into the music scene with one humongous bang. The late Grover Washington Jr. discovered this talented group of youngsters out of his home town of Philadelphia. In their teens these young men had the sound of veteran musicians. The title cut 'Pieces Of A Dream', written by the group (Cedric Napoleon, James Lloyd and Curtis Harmon), sounds as if it was written yesterday. You can feel the influence and the presence of Grover Washington Jr. in every note. The song that made an impact on me is the second selection “Warm Weather” (see youtube box below). The vocalist Barbara Walker paints a picture of a perfect day outside when the weather is just right. Many times I have reminded people that the vocals aren’t Randy Crawford.
Grover makes his presence felt in “Steady Glide”, with Cedric Napoleon’s hard driving bass. This is a great tune to take with you on a road trip. Again Grover seduces you with the soprano saxophone on “Touch Me in the Spring” but it’s not only his masterful blowing, it’s James Lloyd who carries this track to a higher level on the keys. Mr. Washington groomed these young men to perfection.
Earth, Wind & Fire must have been pleased with the rendition of “All About Love”. The blend of Curtis Harmon (drums), James Lloyd (piano) and Cedric Napoleon (bass) creates a marvelous musical stew. When I mentioned that the tracks are great for listening on a trip, you must check out “Easy Road Home”. It’s just what the doctor ordered! On “Lovers“, Cedric croons this sweet tune that’s a perfect fit for any Valentine's Day mix. In the end, you know they had to lay down some funk with “Body Magic”. My collection would be lost without this CD.
