Dizzy Gillespie | Closer To The Source

Dizzy Gillespie
"Closer To The Source"
When you combine Dizzy Gillespie, Stevie Wonder, Marcus Miller, Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland and Dave Grusin you get musical gumbo. This is what this Back In The Day classic brings to the table a large bowl of enjoyment. I remember driving to Huntsville Alabama in 1985 and tuning up and down my radio dial. I found this AM station that was playing some remarkable jazz selections. The dj after a commercial break leads into "Closer to the Source" a selection Dizzy remade form a song written by Leroy Hudson. In addition of Dizzy's role in the song Stevie Wonder kicks in with the harmonica and vocalist Angel Rogers.
The first selection ‘Could It Be You" written by Marcus Miller has a romantic African drum intro that breaks in to some Marcus Miller bass and Dizzy comes in with a smooth trumpet flow. They both complement each other thru out the selection. The next selection Dizzy just put you in dreamland with the Gamble and Huff tune "It's Time For Love" arranged by Kenny Kirkland.
This lp has so much flare. I had the best feeling to know that my all time favorite Gladys Knight & The Pips "You're Number One In My Book" was in the track list. Dizzy and Dave Grusin performed wonders with this song. Rounding out the lp and taking you home is Herbie Hancock's "Textures". I like that each artist gives a solo to send off. This cd is still imprint so get a copy; you never know someday it may not be available.
