Midnight Star - No Parking On The Dance Floor

Ok Charles, You started it.

Don't think for a hot minute that I was going to let you slide away from those comments you left me from your previous review of Midnight Stars' "Headlines". But playa, understand this: My Record Collection runs deep & strong. Strong enough to compare notes with you about Midnight Stars' finest music. We can all agree to disagree cat, but "No Parking On The Dance Floor" gets immediate playback within minutes. With or without a party. Cookout or no cookout. On the road or at the crib. Rain or Shine Baby!

Track Listing:
~ Electricity
~ Night Rider
~ Feels So Good
~ Wet My Whistle
~ No Parking (On The Dance Floor)
~ Freak-A-Zoid
~ Slow Jam
~ Playmates

This album spawned numerous charting hits & broke out the inter-galactic, synthesized funk sound right into mainstream music. Top choice from the Calloway Brothers & the crew formed from Kentucky State Univ. back in 1976.

Every boomboxer back in the 80's knew to get this classic straight from the record store. And it didn't matter whether or not it was on sale. But what I wished was on sale though, back then, was some of those Gerry Curl maintenance products needed to keep our curls fresh. That's right - I had one too, as you made reference to in your review of Midnight Star. (Ha!)

While Midnight Star, like many R&B groups back then who sported them: Ready For The World, Jesse Johnson,  etc..etc..etc, They all at least looked good on stage & video with it. They actually helped make the hair style successful. I was one of those who bought into the trend. But my pockets were a little tight at that time too. And going back to the store to pick up 'Moisturizers', 'Rejuvenators', 'Naturalizers', 'Activators', 'Neutralizers', shampoo & wave caps got costly (I had to keep my curls moist right?). In the end, I just gave up the trip to the hairstylist & shaved my head bald. Case closed.

Back to their 4th album from 1983, the minute you start the album in rotation with "Electricity", you KNOW something is about to get broken off. And I mean some serious, well-composed R&B jams ready to blast you off into outer space! The cuts were so hot, it came at you in all directions. From the fast joints like "No Parking..." & "Freak-A-Zoid", to the mid groove delight of "Wet My Whistle" (Video box above) & my ultimate cut, "Night Rider", to a track that actually was co-written by Babyface himself, Kenneth Edmonds in "Slow Jam". Now THAT was the jam!

All it took was 8 tracks soul music lovers!

Needless to say, their next album, "Planetary Invasion" was off the chain too. I may have to come back to review it for the page! You can't mess with the ultra classic "Curious" (I agree with you on that one Charles! I played that one out!). That's my #1 jam from Midnight Star. (look below!)

And just in case some of you were not made aware, Midnight Star is Back!! They recently performed at a inauguration affair (The Africa & International Friends Inaugural Ball)  for President Barack Obama & have a current new album on CDBaby called "15th Avenue"!
