N II U - Debut Album

Whew...Did you guys, at all, remember these 4 cats from 1994 called "N II U?

In getting prepared for this review, I couldn't help but to take certain pauses throughout my listening pleasure & reminisce on a period of when 'would be' obscure R&B guy groups, as well as girl groups that broke out. Groups of harmonizing young talents that reminded you of a new style The Jackson 5, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Tavares, The Manhattans & so forth. This period of growth, much reflected in the 90's, generated sounds from new school R&B groups like New Edition, New Kids On The Block, Intro, Jodeci, Groove U, U.N.V., Portrait, Shai, A Few Good Men, Silk, Public Announcement, Five IV, No Question, Reel Tight & So many more. Many of which carried on to become champions of successful sales for their projects, all the while the rest became extinct, right into a special place called 'The Hall Of Peace & Quietness". Not to be heard from ever again.

And "N II U" may have fallen victims to their own beautiful talents. So many of those groups may have drowned out the listener from even giving them a chance at being heard for their own merits. Let's see...

We have: Chuckie Howard, Chris Herbert, Don Carlis, & Craig Hill...whom make up a stellar connection of harmonies between the four, decent enough to take the chance & showcase a totally separate sound from their counterparts.

I can't help but to say this: Their debut CD was robbed from being acknowledged as one of the very few R&B groups back in 1994 to release a very solid & thorough...when I mean thorough...I mean complete mix of compositions that doesn't require a repeat button for just one song. Yep...That's Right!

These cats dropped the romance dept a love line of songs so presentful, alongside the productive skills of Vincent Herbert, that I had to go back to
www.secondspin.com & break myself off another CD for backup!

And yes, Clive Davis was an executive producer on this deal!

From "I Miss You" (a hit, do y'all remember?) to "There Will Never Be"...to.."You Don't Have To Cry"...instantly the 90's vibe takes over whatever you are listening to at this moment. All you have to do is let the vocal arrangements & exceptional R&B beats & productions butt in & set up the chance. 11 tracks of straight in the mid tempo'd, steady chillin' on the couch with your feet kicked up on the ottoman kind of set up. Ya' know, the easy way to relax & let the music simply take control.

Other tracks to sooth the melodies described were "I'm Coming Home", "Anything", & the crazy sample of Jamaica Funk from Tom Browne in "Gotta Get Into Me". Alright...THAT ONE JAMMED! No Questions!

But my overall favorite, if I had to list one, goes to
"Right Now".

The only concern for the album came into 2 tracks that may answer certain questions: How come tracks "Let Me Come Inside" & "Gotta Get Into Me" sounds way to much like Kenny Greene's R&B group "Intro" album? The debut album from them? Remember the late lead singer from Intro? Those guys dropped one of the hottest albums of the 90's & y'all know it.

But it shouldn't have taken anything away from this nifty project from N II U.

I would send the shout to the 90's listener & recommend seeking this for your collection. I wish I could play back the entire CD on this site, but it would break the copyright rules & we can't have that now, right?
