Gregory Hines - Self Titled

Back in 1988, Legendary actor & tap-dancer Gregory Hines debut his solo singing career behind the winds & magical flair of another legend that had departed us, Mr. Luther Vandross & released a stellar effort of parallel proportions. I say that because this album almost sounds like a lost archive of Luther's great music. Not to take away any swagger from Gergory Hines ability to sing, but you could not help but to miss BOTH of these cats when you hear this album!!
Track Listing:
~ That Girl Wants To Dance With Me
~ Love Don't Love You Anymore
~ You Need Somebody
~ This Is What I Believe
~ I'm Gonna Get To You
~ There's Nothing Better Than Love (duet with Luther Vandross)
~ Gloria My Love
~ So Much Better Now
From the get go - let me startle you with something here: Luther Vandross wrote & co-wrote ALL the tracks, produced the entire album & was flanked by Skip Anderson, Jason Miles (Heh Man!), Marcus Miller, Paul Jackson, Jr., Nathan East & Errol "Krusher" Bennett (& much more)......most of whom are jazz musicians. And yes, Mr. Smooth Jazz producer Paul Brown lent a helping hand on this one. So guess what ya'll, this album has all the necessary recipes in order to present a solid album. The resume speaks for itself!!
"That Girl Wants To Dance With Me" breaks into the album in fine style, reminding most folks about how Luther would do the same whenever his album kicks off!; It slows back down to "Love Don't Love You Anymore"...not too slow, but a melody driven tune fine enough to showcase enough vocal energy from Mr. Hines; "You Need Somebody" picks up the groove & flows...; "This is What I Believe" carries the overtones of Mr. Vandross's previous compositions & reminds us about his strong background in songwriting.
The whole album, to me, is a continuation of Luther's love for music. And it was well shared along with Gregory Hines!
This album will be best remembered for the teardropper - "There's Nothing Better Than Love". In fact, if you own the Luther Vandross video collection on DVD, you can't help but to replay those scenes of which Gregory & Luther were on stage crooning the memory out of this ballad. How beautiful....
I dedicate this review to my Father. He loved Gregory as a screen actor & now, vocalist. The countless times we saw "White Knights", "Taps" & My Favorite "Running Scared (with Billy Crystal). If I could only have the chance to share the same stage like Gregory & Luther did with my Pops............
