The "No Escaping The Funk" review by Marvin Dickey

It was 76 degree's in Houston Saturday afternoon, as I was heading
towards Galveston's East beach, For the Halloween Funk fest featuring
Cameo, S.O.S. band, Ohio Players, Morris day and the Time and Cameo.
I arrived there top-down, chilling and pumping Chaka Khan. A couple of
women were looking hard and I said 'what's sup'? Come to find out they were looking at the Silver RR Bentley behind me (To good to be true that two fine women said hi to me!). Anyways, I arrived
right before the S.O.S. band came on. Host J. Anthony Brown was already rippin' on
someone (comedy segment). It was a nice crowd considering there was only one porta potty.
S.O.S. Band came on and they did a pretty good job even though they had
a time limit. The only original member was the lead singer Mary Davis (That's
the only one I recognized). They did 6 songs -
"Just Be Good To Me",
"Weekend Girl", "Take Your Time, Do It Right",
and three others.

The Ohio Players came on & did three songs - "Skin Tight", "Love Roller
Coaster", "I Just Want To Be Free".....Ok lets move on!

It was just about 9:30 when Morris Day and The Time w/original members
Monte Moir and Jellybean Johnson, hit the stage and tore it up!! Even J.
Anthony brown was playing in the band! Everybody in the Audience was
dancing & singing. No one, I mean, no one was sitting down! Even people
were doing the cupid shuffle to dance track '777-9311' for an hour and 15 minutes.
The
Time
simply ripped it!!

I didn't stay for the last act Cameo, plus they would have to do a small
set due to time constraints. But the kicker to this was that the
promoter who put on this show did this out of his own pocket, no
sponsors, nothing (that's a lot of money)!!
