Back In The Day Music!: Glenn Jones I Timeless R&B Classics
Glenn Jones I Timeless R&B Classics
R&B ballads of the years past has maintained is true value of graceful melodies, heartfelt penmanship/songwriting skills & outstanding production from various studio musicians, including many jazz artists who - today - play alongside contemporaryjazz musicians. Speaking of such comes a project that not only puts the velvety, vocal prowess of Glenn Jones back on the map....but also highlights an up & coming producer that may very well help change the game of how some compositions can be retouched & sound good all over again!!
Mr. Glenn Jones brings another R&B tribute CD to our Kitchen table! These choice for songs were redone very well, considering hearing Glenn sing to them, as opposed to the R&B singers who originally laid them out:
Song Selections:
-- Another Sad Love Song-- Anniversary-- Where Is The Love?-- Here I Go Again-- My First Love-- Reaching For The Sky-- You're Sweet, You're Fine, You're Everything (To Me)-- Show & Tell-- Signed, Sealed, Delivered-- I Wish He Didn'tTrust Me So Much
For most of those R&B treasures, I'm sure you may be able to identify them easily. "Another Sad Love Song" once was Toni Braxton's big hit.....Will it sit well hearing it from Mr. Jones vocals with you? Check it out & see for yourself. I thought he grooved it!
"Anniversary" by Toni, Tone, Tony was covered by various Cont/Smooth jazz players on their albums, but when Glenn laid it on the line, you may consider this one much better than its predecessors. IMO, that's all!
Glenn's wife - Genobia Jeter Jones - gave a strong background/Lead support on many tunes offered, but really 'broke it down' on "My First Love"! A "Rene & Angela" slow jam!!!
The wine bottle was opened 'officially' after recieving a dose of the classic "You're Sweet, You're Fine, You're Everything"....man..oh...Man! The sax solo by Kim Waters reminded me of the time when slow jams had an instrumental sidebar. This production took me back a little bit to the ballads of yesterday....which leads to this next promising statement:
Mr. Chris "Big Dog" Davis.
This cat has a special ear for the music he touches. This is without, no doubt!, a special project all together -- because not only is it refreshing to hear the magic of Mr. Jones, but it was truly an experience listening to Mr. Davis go through each track & supplement the arrangements to these songs!! From changing drum programming, musical paces ~ to his own piano sidebar in "My First Love", I was VERY impressed & will look forward to more projects produced by that cat down the line.
The performers/musicians played a huge part in providing the background to an otherwise excellent CD of choice! This one would have to be recommended to the old school lovers of the slow jams...or unless you enjoy some nice easy-listening R&B music with some classic instrumental solos/breakaways in the compositions! This one's for you!
